Dance cards (or ball programmes), popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, were these small, decorated cards, where young men signed up for specific dances with young girls, a gendered practice that ended in the 1940s. AXIS GALLERY, SACRAMENTO. Artists Doug Dertinger and Nick Shepard will be in conversation on their current exhibitions. The images in Stalker by Dertinger navigate terrains where emptiness, silence, and light can become conditions of consciousness, where place can shift from environment to presence, wholly other, sentient and responsive. The Known World contains images that vary in subject matter and technique but remain grounded in Shepard’s ongoing concern with how photographs are built, how spaces are assembled, and what is concealed in the process. 1p—2p.
