Spring-Ready Rides: How to prep your bike for the season

By: Pamela Thompson, The Bike Campaign

April is when the weather starts to get nice, and at The Bike Campaign we’re here to help answer questions and provide information so you can get your bike out on the road where fun awaits.

If you need a bike, The Bike Garage – Davis will be having a bike sale Saturday, April 4 from 11a—2p at 606 Peña #300. Come on by, check out the fantastic bikes, and take $25 off any bike we have in stock; we also have some trailers. All of our used bikes are mechanic tested and ready to ride.

This month the NorCal Trykers are having their annual bike-a-thon on April 12; the proceeds support providing free bikes to children with disabilities. The ride features three distances—15K, 50K and 100K—and features rest stops with coffee and snacks and a luncheon for all riders at the Stonegate Country Club after the ride. Head to eventcreate.com/e/bikefortrykes2026 for more information.

Are you a teacher, principal, or staff member at a Yolo County school who needs a bike? Become a Roll Model! The Bike Campaign is offering a $125 rebate for educators who want to show their students that bikes are a great mode of transportation. Ride your bike to and from your school, around your campus and in town, agree to share your photo and story with us and your school district and receive a $125 rebate on any bike or trailer purchase at either Bike Garage location (applicable to bikes and trailers in stock). Email Maria at funmaria@sbcglobal.net for more information.

Spring events start in April, like the UC Davis Powwow and Picnic Day. Do you have everything you need to get to and from events safely, and secure your bike when you get there? The Bike Garage has helmets, locks, and lights to keep you legal and safe. Remember to always lock your bike to a bike rack or stand, and to use lights if you’re riding within 30 minutes of dawn or sunset, or at night.

Trying to figure out how to get around town on your bike? The Bike Campaign has new maps! Drop by and pick yours up at either Bike Garage location and explore Davis and Woodland by bike!

Looking ahead to May, the Bike Garage – Davis will have a bike repair workshop on Saturday, May 16 from 1p to 3p at 606 Peña #300. Bring your bike and learn how to maintain it in a friendly and helpful environment. The cost is $25, and the workshop is limited to 25 people. To register, contact Maria at funmaria@sbcglobal.net.

The Bike Campaign, along with its counterpart, The Bike Garage, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 to help educate people about bicycling and encourage more people to ride their bikes. We work closely with city governments, county health departments, school districts, and community service groups.
