Valley Clean Energy Saves Yolo County Customers $1.6 Mil

By: Rebecca Boyles, Valley Clean Energy

In 2024, Valley Clean Energy (VCE), Yolo’s public power option, is delivering a new discount on electricity rates for households, homes, and businesses, at a time when basic needs are becoming more expensive.

As part of its commitment to keeping rates affordable, VCE is offering its 125,000 customers in Woodland, Winters, Davis, and unincorporated Yolo County $1.6 million dollars in rate relief in 2024.

This comes in the form of offering a 3.5% rate discount for low-income and medically vulnerable customers on CARE (California Alternate Rates for Energy), FERA (Family Electric Rate Assistance) and Medical Baseline programs, in addition to state-provided discounts customers are already receiving.

VCE is offering a 1% rate discount relative to Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) for other customers. VCE Customers will begin to see the new discounts on their bill starting in March.

This announcement comes on the heels of a decision by VCE’s Board of Directors to provide 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

This goal, coupled with rate discounts, underscores VCE’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to renewable energy for all its customers.

The timing of VCE’s rate relief stands in contrast to planned PG&E rate increases in March, after rates already increased in January.

VCE, a public agency, uses its revenues from electricity sales to increase benefits to customers, rather than paying shareholders dividends
while customer rates continue to rise.

Valley Clean Energy Board of Directors Chair Lucas Frerichs emphasized the organization’s commitment to empowering communities with sustainable, affordable energy choices: “At a time when inflation is impacting many of our household bills, I’m proud that Valley Clean Energy is offering discounted rates for our customers, while also meeting our clean energy goals. Our Board of Directors wants to demonstrate the positive impact we can provide to our communities when we prioritize people over profits.”
