City of Davis Seeks Next Poet Laureate

By: Barbara Archer, City of davis

Nominations are now being accepted until Friday, May 24, 2024, for the City of Davis’ next Poet Laureate.

The Poet Laureate must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Davis. Additionally, they must be able to serve the three-year term and have demonstrated a commitment to and passion for poetry and embrace the opportunity to engage in civic discourse.

Davis residents may nominate themselves or another candidate for the position.

“Poetry has the power to elevate public discourse and benefit the community as a whole. It serves as a medium for expressing thoughts, emotions and ideas that can spark meaningful conversations and reflections,” said Davis Mayor Josh Chapman. “The Davis Poet Laureate position helps community members connect through spoken word and inspires positive change by delving into issues at a deeper level.”

The Poet Laureate is a liaison, advocate and leader who will leverage their artistic excellence and literary achievements to inspire the diverse residents of the Davis community to read, write, perform and appreciate the written and spoken word. This honorary three-year position celebrates the art of poetry and its impact on the Davis community. Past City Poet Laureates include: Allegra Silberstein (2010-2012), Eve West Bessier (2012-2014), Dr. Andy Jones (2014-2018), James Lee Jobe (2018-2021) and Julia B. Levine (2022-September 2024).

Duties of the Poet Laureate include, but are not limited to:

  • Representing the City of Davis and the art of poetry at outreach activities
  • Presenting original works of poetry at official City events throughout the year
  • Writing and submitting poetry about Davis for publication
  • Presenting and discussing poetry at community events, in schools or with community groups
  • Acting as a resource for poetry and literary activities in Davis

The application includes submitting a brief letter describing the candidate’s qualities and skills, three original works of poetry from the candidate and the candidate’s resume or CV. More information about the nomination guidelines can be found on the City’s website at: https://www.cityofdavis.org/city-hall/city-manager-s-office/arts-culture/arts-initiatives#poetry.

A panel, comprised of members of the Civic Arts Commission and community members, will review applications and select finalists. The Civic Arts Commission will then provide a recommendation of the City’s next Poet Laureate to the City Council for final approval.

In October 2009, the Davis City Council established the position of Poet Laureate to bring the power and beauty of poetry to the Davis community while increasing awareness of the literary arts through community engagement and outreach.

All nominations must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, and can be submitted by email, as a single PDF, to: rhartsough@cityofdavis.org or mailed via mail to Attn: Rachel Hartsough, City of Davis/CMO, 23 Russell Blvd, Davis, CA  95616. For more information about the Poet Laureate position, contact Rachel Hartsough at: rhartsough@cityofdavis.org.
