National Walk & Bike to School Day is October 1

By: Barbara Archer, City of Davis

The City of Davis invites K-12 students to join in celebrating National Walk & Bike to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025. On this day, students in Davis and across the country will walk or bike to school, accompanied by parents, teachers and community leaders. While the event is centered around students, the City encourages all community members to be extra cautious and aware as more children will be biking and walking throughout the day.

Please remember:

  • Drive with caution: Keep everyone safe by watching for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling to and from school.
  • Bike safely: Student riders should ride predictably, stay aware of their surroundings and always wear helmets.
  • Plan ahead: Families are encouraged to review their routes to school in advance and discuss key decision-making points with children to ensure a safe and confident journey.
  • Stay visible: Bright or reflective clothing helps walkers and riders stand out to drivers, especially during the early morning or late afternoon hours when visibility is reduced.
  • Make it a celebration: Schools and families can boost participation by organizing walking school buses, bike trains or festive meet-up spots that make the trip to school fun and memorable.

Walk & Bike to School Day raises awareness of the need for safer routes for walking and biking while highlighting the benefits of increased physical activity among children, improved pedestrian and cyclist safety and reduced traffic congestion. Events like this also foster stronger connections between families, schools and the broader community, while celebrating the distinct and vibrant bike culture that defines Davis.
