Everywhere Science, an education and communications non-profit, announced today the launch of the first-ever Davis Flash Film Challenge, a new community-focused filmmaking competition and film festival. Designed to provide a new platform for local creators, actors and artists to collaborate and showcase their work, this year’s inaugural program kicks off on January 28, 2026 and culminates with the Davis Flash Film Festival on February 28, 2026 at Sudwerk Brewing in Davis, California.
The Davis Flash Film Challenge invites filmmakers of all ages and experience levels to produce an original short film in just one month, using a specific creative prompt that will be revealed at a kickoff event held at the Everywhere Science studio in Davis on January 28 at 7 p.m. The prompt might be a specific line of dialogue, a location, a character or a prop. Over the ensuing four weeks, filmmakers will write, film and edit an original film that incorporates the required prompt. The films must be less than seven minutes in length and remain family-friendly (appropriate for a PG-13 audience or younger).
“We’re thrilled to help shine a spotlight on the creative energy that exists in our community and work to inspire tomorrow’s storytellers,” said Craig Musburger, President of Everywhere Science, and Emmy Award-winning cameraman. “The Davis Flash Film Challenge is meant to be a welcoming place for all filmmakers, regardless of skill level. We hope to build a competitive and supportive environment where local creators and artists can collaborate, experiment, and share their work with the wider community.”
The films submitted to the challenge will be screened at the Davis Flash Film Festival on the evening of February 28, 2026 at Sudwerk Brewing in Davis, California where a panel of judges will present awards in several categories, and attendees will be able to vote for an audience favorite.
Participation in the Davis Flash Film Challenge and admission to all related events are free. Organizers invite all filmmaking enthusiasts, regardless of experience, to join the challenge and the creative community in Davis. Everywhere Science will be hosting workshops throughout the duration of the filmmaking time window helping filmmakers with various aspects of the filmmaking process.
The Davis Flash Film Challenge is being supported in part by a grant from the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program. Arts & Culture Manager Rachel Hartsough for the City of Davis shares that “The City is excited to support this new initiative that not only furthers our mission of empowering our creative community here in Davis but will expand our community’s capacity for storytelling.”
