Poetry Night: Tess Taylor & Class

May 28, 2020 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

A Special Poetry Reading: Tess Taylor’s Advanced Poetry Students, and a bit of open mic

Bonus Poetry Night via ZOOM! Join us at 8 PM on Thursday, May 28th

Dear Friends of Poetry,

On Thursday, May 28th, at 8 PM we will offer a poetry reading via ZOOM. To participate, visit https://ucdavisdss.zoom.us/my/andyojones at 8 PM, or a few minutes before if you wish to chat with the host and the other attendees.

This short (about 45 minutes) poetry reading will feature individual poems by some of the star students from Tess Taylor’s Advanced Poetry Class, with a bit of open mic sprinkled in, time allowing.

Poets scheduled to join us include Anthony DiCarlo, Dion Shaughnessy, Matt Rogers, Maya Pescatore, and Melanie Manuel. Tess Taylor will also introduce her class and read a poem.

Tess Taylor is the voice of poetry and poetry reviews on All Things Considered on National Public Radio. This spring, she published two books of poems: Last West, part of Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures, at the MoMA, and Rift Zone, from Red Hen Press. Taylor’s chapbook, The Misremembered World, was selected by the late Eavan Boland for the Poetry Society of America’s inaugural chapbook fellowship. The San Francisco Chronicle called her first book, The Forage House, “stunning” and it was a finalist for the Believer Poetry Award. Her second book, Work & Days, was called “our moment’s Georgic” by critic Stephanie Burt and named one of the 10 best books of poetry of 2016 by The New York Times. Taylor’s work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Kenyon ReviewPoetry, Tin House, The Times Literary Supplement, CNN, and The New York Times among others, and she’s received awards and fellowships from MacDowell, Headlands Center for the Arts, and The International Center for Jefferson Studies. She grew up and lives again in El Cerrito, California.

The Poetry Night Reading Series, usually taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month, is generously supported by the John Natsoulas Gallery and by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley. Your host will be Dr. Andy Jones, the poet laureate emeritus of the City of Davis.

Please join us on Thursday, May 28th, at 8 PM. You’ll be glad you did!
