Poetry Night Reading Series: Beth Suter
December 15, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Free
Beth Suter is the author of the new poetry book titled Snake and Eggs . Beth grew up in rural Missouri close to grandparents who survived the Great Depression by gathering wild food. She learned that the forest was both a place to look for beauty and a place to look for lunch. She has had a deep connection with nature ever since and considers herself an ecopoet. She started writing poems as an undergraduate studying Environmental Science at U.C. Davis, and continued writing during her years as a naturalist and teacher.
Beth Suter started publishing poetry in 2013, and has since appeared in over forty publications including Colorado Review, New American Writing, Barrow Street , DMQ Review , and Birmingham Poetry Review. She won first place in the Nature Category at the 2013 Ina Coolbrith Poetry Contest and was chosen as a finalist in the Pat Schneider Poetry Contest in 2015. A 2016 Napa Valley Writers’ Conference alumna, she has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize and once nominated for a Best of the Net Prize in 2020. She participates widely in workshops and readings in Davis and at the Sacramento Poetry Center. Follow Beth Suter at http://facebook.com/bethfsuter
Andy Jones will be reading “Where Love Is, There God Is Also,” a holiday story of sorts by Leo Tolstoy. Andy is the author of four books and the host of the Poetry Night Reading Series. Find (and subscribe to) his weekly newsletter at https://andyjones.substack.com
[Due to Covid exposure, Bethanie Humphreys will be rescheduled as a featured poet in 2023.]
This event will take place indoors on the temperature-controlled third floor of the John Natsoulas Gallery (521 1st Street) at 7 PM on Thursday, December 15, 2022. There will be an open mic after the Beth Suter reading. Open mic performances will be limited to four minutes or two items, whichever is shorter. As Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “Be sincere, Be brief, Be seated.” Sincerity will not be enforced. The open mic list typically fills by 7 PM, so please arrive early if you would like to perform something during the 8 o’clock hour.
Please wear a mask to Poetry Night. According to a Yolo County December 6 press release, “This winter is the first in several years where we are seeing significant flu and RSV activity, in addition to COVID-19, so we are now making masking recommendations based on all circulating respiratory viruses, not just on COVID,” said Yolo County Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson. “Wearing a high-quality mask indoors is a great way to protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses like flu, RSV, and COVID-19.”
The Poetry Night Reading Series, taking place on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7 PM, is generously supported by the people and poets of the Sacramento Valley, and by John Natsoulas and the staff at the John Natsoulas Gallery. This event is supported by Katerina Hanks, producer, Timothy Nutter, sound and lighting engineer, and you.
