30TH ANNUAL CITY OF DAVIS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION ON JAN. 15

Jan. 8, 2024 – The City of Davis and the Human Relations Commission invite the public to attend the 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 15, at the Veterans Memorial Theatre, located at 203 East 14th Street in Davis.

The theme of this year’s event is “Peace Activism” and acknowledges the need and importance of solidarity in the face of adversity. The community is invited to arrive at 10 a.m., when doors open, and enjoy an exhibit created by local Ethnic Studies high school students in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. with music and speakers to help commemorate Dr. King’s principles of civil rights, peace and non-violence. After the event concludes at 11:45 a.m., a march from the Veterans Memorial Theatre to the Solidarity Space in Central Park will start at noon.

“This annual event is a time to celebrate and honor the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Davis Vice Mayor Josh Chapman, who will be sworn in as mayor on Jan. 9. “I am proud to live in a community that fosters equality and supports opportunities for inclusion.”

“The inspiration for this year’s theme, Peace Activism, was the core of Dr. King’s powerful response to one of the most difficult times our nation ever faced,” said Human Relations Commission Chair NJ Mvondo. “As we collectively aspire to build peace locally and globally, this celebration presents us with a unique opportunity to reflect on past challenges and victories, while inspiring and amplifying present acts of solidarity.”

Speakers and performers for the celebration include Rev. Connie Simon from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, Chair of the Multi-Cultural Community Council Tessa Smith, Davis Poet Laureate Julia Levine and the dance group Afro Mini Vibes. This family-friendly celebration will include complimentary coffee and snacks and feature a kid’s activity table provided by the Yolo County Library. Local civil rights organizations will also table before and after the program.
