Dancing the Afrofuture Book Event
March 8 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeBook Tour Reading by recognized scholar in the burgeoning field of global Hip-Hop Studies UC
Davis Professor Emerita Dr. Halifu Osumare. Her new memoir Dancing the Afrofuture: Hula Hip-Hop and the Dunham Legacy chronicles her transition from dancer-activist in the San Francisco Bay Area to academic capturing the zeitgeist of hip-hop culture. In the memoir Osumare is living in Hawaiʻi earning a doctorate and following her mentor Katherine Dunham’s model by studying and performing hula when she begins researching the effects of hip-hop culture on Hawaiʻian youth. She soon develops her “connective marginality” theory to explain the internationalization of hip-hop youth culture. Dancing the Afrofuture illuminates the ways that the Black past reveals itself in the Afro-Present even as it trends into the Afrofuture.
