Tori Hunter’s exhibit will contain illustrations and paintings of melanated pop culture superheroes and original characters. She will have posters and other merchandise available for purchase at her 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on June 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Public receptions for local artists will also be held at various venues on that same evening in conjunction with the Davis Downtown 2nd Friday ArtAbout, facebook.com/davisartabout.

Tori Hunter was born and raised in Oakland, California, and began drawing as a young child. Her early influences were the “Sailor Moon” manga series, the “X-Men” and “Transformers” film franchises, and the Marvel and DC comics encyclopedias.

Tori took her drawing and painting to another level in her second year at San Francisco State University. On the advice of a professor she began to draw for eight to ten hours a day. She was accepted into the SFSU animation program and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Cinema and minoring in Animation.

When the hashtag #BlackHermione started trending she decided to create her own version of this iconic character from the Wizarding World novels. She quickly discovered that fans appreciated seeing people of color in pop culture roles at a time when the portrayals were not prevalent in mainstream media.

A visit to the artist alley at Houston’s Comicpalooza, the largest pop culture festival in Texas, motivated her to start a commercial venture for her work. Tori now runs her own business, BMJ Art Shop, specializing in melanated versions of new and traditional superheroes, original characters, and commissioned work. Her paintings adorn stickers, buttons, key chains, and other merchandise. Through her work she continues to celebrate the credo represented by the acronym in the name of her business: Black Magickal Joy.
