The League of American Bicyclists (League) announced today that it is renewing the City of Davis’ Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award for the sixth time in a row for its continued leadership in active transportation. Davis is one of three communities in the U.S. this year to receive the platinum status (the others being Fort Collins, Colorado, and Madison, Wisconsin).
Davis has a long and nationally recognized history of bicycling leadership. The City of Davis is the longest-standing Platinum-level community in the nation, having received the League’s first-ever Platinum award level in 2005, and the City has maintained that status continuously ever since. This achievement reflects decades of sustained commitment to bicycling as a safe, convenient and integral part of everyday life in Davis.
The League’s Bicycle Friendly America program sets the standard for how communities build and benchmark progress toward making biking better. Since the program’s launch, over 900 applications have been submitted for recognition. In the current award cycle, 79 new and renewing communities were recognized, joining a total of 444 current Bicycle Friendly Communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Applications are accepted annually, and designations last for four years, meaning communities are recognized on staggered timelines rather than all at once.
As part of the BFC review process, the League asked applicants to survey their community to gain a better understanding of local bicyclists’ experiences and explore each person’s connection to Davis. As a result, community input played an important role in the City receiving the Platinum award level this round and the City of Davis extends its sincere thanks to everyone who participated.
Davis’s Platinum designation highlights ongoing investments in bike infrastructure, safety improvements, policies that support active transportation and programs that encourage people to choose biking for both daily travel and recreation. The City remains committed to building on this strong foundation and continuing to improve conditions for people who use active modes of transportation.
