Davis Bike Collective raises funds to support cycling instruction at local schools

By: Pamela Thompson, The Bike Campaign

Spring arrives this month! Now that colder and wetter weather is lessening, it’s a great time to get out and ride.

If your bike has been sitting all winter, or if you’ve been out and about in wet weather, consider getting it inspected and tuned up. Bring it by one of the Bike Garage locations and we can check it out.

Bike Garage – Davis (606 Peña Drive #300) is open Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to noon. Bike Garage – Woodland (1st and Hays streets at Douglass Middle School) is open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Spring is also a good time to check your helmet. If it has cracks, or if you’ve been in a crash, it’s time to replace it.

The Davis Bike Club (DBC) is holding their March Bicycle Madness event again this year, one of the club’s fundraisers that helps fund local bicycle advocacy nonprofits.

If you’re interested in increasing your cycling, or physical activity in general, this is a great way to do it. There is an online application and fee ($25 for adults, $11 for children), and all types of bicycles can be used, including electric, stationary bikes, spin classes, and regular bicycles.

All riders are required to be DBC members to ensure that participants are covered by the club’s insurance policy.

Set a mileage goal (the minimum number of miles is 10), and then see if you can exceed it. Any time you cycle: log your miles, and see how far you can go. Prizes will be awarded to the riders who log the most miles.

While riding outdoors is encouraged, if you only log indoor miles your total mileage for the month will be capped at 1,000 miles.

The fee you spend joining in the event benefits local students. In 2025, the DBC gave $1,000 to The Bike Campaign (TBC) to help fund their Bike Skills Training Program (BSTP) in local elementary schools.

For more information go to davisbikeclub.org/march-bicycle-madness/.

If you’d like to help teach elementary school students how to ride, TBC is looking for volunteers. Their BSTP will be working with schools in Davis, Woodland and Knights Landing this March and April.

The BSTP teaches second and fifth graders how to ride bikes using the balance bike method, so there is no stooping, lifting or running for volunteers. Training is provided, and you can participate when it fits your schedule.

The BSTP brings their bike fleet to schools and teaches students hand signals, how to wear a helmet correctly, brake properly, traffic awareness, and how to be a courteous cyclist. Join in and help train the next generation of cyclists!

The Bike Campaign, along with its counterpart, The Bike Garage, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 to help educate people about bicycling and encourage more people to ride their bikes. We work closely with city governments, county health departments, school districts, and community service groups.
