Days after the sudden and unceremonious laying off of Bob Dunning—who penned America’s longest running newspaper column, The Wary One—The Enterprise has lost it’s most popular online column, Comings & Goings.
Columnist Wendy Weitzel started Comings & Goings in 2021 to shed light on the businesses coming and going from Davis and Yolo County.
Last week, Weitzel left The Enterprise in an act of solidarity with Dunning.
A week after being laid off, Dunning started publishing his column on Substack where he’s found the support of paid subscribers from all over the country.
Substack is a platform that allows writers and journalists to publish their work on a subscription-basis, essentially bypassing the middleman-ness of the newspaper itself.
Weitzel announced her departure from The Enterprise in her final Comings & Goings column with the publication.
Like Dunning, she will continue her reporting in a direct-to-reader fashion through her new Substack.
“I’m excited about the possibilities with this Substack platform. Although the heart of my posts will be what you expect – business changes in and around Davis – there are opportunities for deeper features, and peeks into what I do and how I work,” Weitzel wrote in her first unpaid post on the platform.
