Celebrate Indonesian Diaspora at International House

By: Shelly Gilbride for International House Davis

Hailed as “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia,” Gamelan Sekar Jaya is coming to Davis to perform at International House Davis on February 24.

I-House Davis is celebrating Indonesian culture from 3:00p—8:30p, showcasing the dynamic music, dance and art of the Indonesian Diaspora.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya will lead two different music workshops for all ages and then perform an evening concert of Balinese music and dance. Each activity has its own registration event page, and you can learn more about this
celebration at bit.ly/gamelanindonesiandiaspora.

From 3:00-4:00pm, join I-House Davis for an interactive Balinese music and dance workshop suitable for all ages. Learn basic dance techniques and explore the harmonious sounds of the
gamelan ensemble. Then, from 5:00-6:00 pm, discover the rhythmic art of Balinese kecak in a vocal percussion workshop led by master artists Ni Nyoman Srayamurtikanti and I Made Suteja.
Finally, from 7:00-8:30 pm, enjoy a concert by Gamelan Sekar Jaya featuring traditional and contemporary compositions. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of
Indonesian culture.

In addition to the workshops and concert, attendees are invited to visit I-House Davis to view an exhibition of Balinese art by I Made Moja through the month of February. This display is
available during office hours.
