How Davis celebrates Bike Month

by: Pamela Thompson, The Bike Campaign

May is bike month, and The Bike Campaign (TBC) is finishing its spring Bicycle Skills Training Program (BSTP) in the Yolo County Schools.

During the 2025-26 school year, BSTP volunteers brought the program to 17 Yolo County schools, and taught 1,822 elementary school students how to ride and/or refine their cycling skills.

TBC also purchased two fleets of bikes from All Kids Bike (AKB) for the Woodland and Winters school districts. The AKB program is tailored to kindergartners, and includes training for the teachers, 24 bikes for students, a bike for the teacher, helmets, and two racks on which to store the bikes and helmets.

The bikes start as balance bikes, and pedals are included for the fleet so the bikes can be converted when the students have developed their skills.

Since the weather is great for riding this month, consider heading to Woodland on Saturday, May 2, when Woodland will be having the first annual Woodland Wheelin’ ride in conjunction with the official opening celebration of the Woodland Bike Loop.

The loop is 16 miles round trip, and there will be both a full loop ride and a shorter family ride (three miles). Rick Gonzales Sr. Park is where the ride will begin, and riders can start gathering at 9a; there will be coffee, snacks, and prizes.

Woodland has made a huge commitment to bicycle infrastructure, which the new loop highlights. The route features blue and green signs to help riders follow the loop, which goes by Woodland cultural features, schools, and parks.

The Bike Campaign has free bike maps for both Davis and Woodland available at both Bike Garage locations.

Bike Garage—Davis is located at 606 Peña Drive #300, Davis, and is open Wednesdays from 1p—5p and Saturdays from 8a—noon. Summer hours, June 3—August 26, are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8a—noon.

Bike Garage—Woodland is located at 1st and Hays Streets, Woodland at Douglass Middle School, and is open Saturdays from 9a—noon.

Are you an experienced cyclist looking for a challenge? The Davis Double Century is May 16 this year, the best supported double century ride in California. It’s hosted by the Davis Bike Club, and the proceeds support local bike advocacy groups. Head to davisbikeclub.org/davis-double-century for more information and registration.

If 200 miles on a bike sounds a bit daunting, consider volunteering to help run the event. Head to tinyurl.com/2026volunteertohelp to sign up.

Thursday, May 7 is Big Day of Giving, and TBC is participating again this year. Want to find out more about who we are and what we do? Come by G Street Plaza from 5:30p—7:30p that day and say hi!

The Bike Campaign, along with its counterpart, The Bike Garage, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 to help educate people about bicycling and encourage more people to ride their bikes. We work closely with city governments, county health departments, school districts, and community service groups.
