Food, Dignity, & Community: Stories from Yolo County’s front lines

Despite Yolo County’s storied history as a major agriculture producer, food insecurity amongst families living in the region exceeds both state and national levels. An estimated 29-percent of households in Yolo County do not have access to enough food to meet their basic needs, according to research from the Yolo Food Bank. For families with children in the home, the numbers are even more dire: 40-percent of homes with children in Yolo County are food insecure. And the numbers are even higher for families who work in the agriculture industry: 53-percent of the workers who grow and harvest the food we eat do not have enough of their own.

These stories were prepared by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, to encourage volunteerism and donations to the front line organizations keeping families fed in Yolo County.

Across Yolo County, neighbors show up for one another in meaningful ways: packing weekend meals for students, delivering food to seniors, and connecting families with fresh, culturally relevant produce. These efforts reflect a shared belief that food offers more than sustenance. It also provides care, dignity, and connection.

The five organizations featured here are working on the front lines of food access in Yolo County, each bringing a unique approach shaped by community voice and local need. Together, they reflect the collaboration and creativity required to address hunger in ways that are both responsive and effective.

Their work is made possible through a network of philanthropic support, including contributions from community members and mission-driven funders like the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.

These stories offer a glimpse of what’s possible when community, philanthropy, and local leadership come together around a shared goal: ensuring every neighbor has access to the food they need.
