The City of Davis Human Relations Commission announced today that the nomination period for the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards is now open and will continue through Monday, March 16, 2026. The nomination process is simple and can be completed in about 15 minutes by filling out a brief form and statement.
Established in 1986, the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards recognize local individuals and organizations who promote civil rights, civic engagement or positive human relations, and those who help improve the quality of life for Davis residents and visitors. The awards honor the memory of Davis High School student, Thong Hy Huynh, who was tragically killed on May 4, 1983, and serve to raise awareness of social justice, inclusion and community understanding.
“Individuals and organizations who stand up for civil rights and help others find their voice play a vital role in building a more just, more connected and more resilient community. The Thong Hy Huynh Awards recognize this work and reaffirm our shared commitment to equity and inclusion.” said City of Davis Mayor Donna Neville.
Awards are presented each year in three categories: ages under 18, ages 18 and over and community organizations (which may include members of any age). Nomination forms and guidelines are available online at www.cityofdavis.org.
Qualities to consider in nominating an individual or organization include:
- Promoting civil rights and/or civic engagement
- Creating positive human relations in our multicultural and diverse community
- Improving the quality of life in Davis for residents and visitors through: health promotion, human services, housing, education, employment, cultural awareness or peaceful conflict resolution
Nominations will be accepted through Monday, March 16, 2026. Additional information about the award, including past recipients, can be found here: https://www.cityofdavis.org/about-davis/community-awards/huynh-award-nominations#!/.
