San Miguel de Allende (Guanajuato, Mexico) is a magical place and it didn’t take long for Lorie Topinka to fall under its spell after moving there in 2012. While the town of San Miguel is a world class tourist attraction, the enduring magic for her was in the surrounding countryside. For many years she explored the countryside with paint brush in hand and focused on the abundant capillas (chapels) and historic ruins (haciendas, dams, bridges) in the area.
Our exhibit features paintings from these books and paintings from Topinka’s private collection highlighting the people and festivals of San Miguel de Allende.

“As a watercolor artist, I am drawn to bold colors and iconic images. Whenever I am painting, I get lost for a time in the looking and seeing. There is no time, nor distance, nor separation between me and the object or scene. This creative process is joyful and I try to represent, with color, this joy.”
