Youth Artists K-12 will exhibit their artwork during May 1 – 31\, 2026 at Axis Gallery located at 625 S Street\, Sacramento\, CA 95811. The Artist Reception will be on “2nd Saturday”– May 9th\, 2026 at 5pm-8pm. \nThe exhibition will feature artwork from Student Champions of Chalk It Up’s Annual High School Self-Portrait Competition. The winning and “Best of Medium” Youth Artists will have an amazing opportunity to share with the public an expansion of their creative art portfolios. \nAXIS Gallery is providing Youth Artists with an experience of having an art exhibition in a professional gallery. “The youth art exhibition is a unique opportunity for young artists to gain experience in a professional Gallery setting\,” stated Artist-Member and Program Coordinator\, Delgreta Brown. \n“Young Artists will have a reputable gallery to add to their artistic resume– it’s a highly coveted and critical thing to have for jumpstarting a career in the arts for emerging artists\,” Ms. Brown related. \nAdditionally\, the AXIS Youth Art Exhibition will feature phenomenal indoor murals created by Sacramento-area Youth Artists from the nonprofit arts organization the ARTners Collaborative. \nDuring the Artist Reception\, youth artists from the literary and performing arts community will ignite AXIS Gallery with their talented works. \nAXIS Gallery invites the public to attend this awesome experience which celebrates youth creativity in multiple artforms.

The title was developed in response to the work and writings of the artists in the exhibition and to the regional presence of rivers that move through and around Sacramento. Water becomes a point of connection—flowing\, sustaining\, eroding\, nurturing\, and reshaping. It can lift\, carry\, overwhelm\, or renew. The flow of a river may also be understood simply as the movement of material through the earth. In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning.
