SUMMARY:Call to Artists! Slice: A Juried Exhibit of Regional Art 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Pence’s Slice exhibit\, now in its 14th year\, is open for submission by California artists working in any medium (except video or sound). This is an ‘open theme’ exhibit\, which showcases art that is conceptually thoughtful\, technically skilled\, and representative of contemporary trends in art. Two-dimensional work must not exceed 36” wide\, and three-dimensional work must not exceed 75 lb. Applicants may submit between 1-3 images of work for review\, with an artist statement and resume\, at www.callforentry.org\, and pay $35 for Pence Members ($40 for non-Pence Members) by May 12th\, 9 PM PST. Prizes of $200-400 will be awarded by the juror during the reception. \nThis year’s juror is Gioia Fonda\, an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in two-dimensional media (painting\, drawing\, sewing\, and photography) with occasional forays in sculpture\, social practice and public art. Regardless of media\, she tends to work in a colorful and non objective manner\, but just under the surface\, her work is often imbued with storytelling and narrative. She has a bi-coastal art education\, having earned a BFA at the California College of the Arts and an MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Gioia is a dedicated member of the Sacramento art community contributing as an artist\, curator\, jurist\, and collaborator. She is also a tenured professor of art at Sacramento City College where she teaches painting\, drawing\, and design. DESCRIPTION:The Abstract Language of Ceramics\nExhibit: April 10 – June 3\, 2026\nReception: April 10\, 6-9 PM (Free) \nThe Abstract Language of Ceramics features the work of ceramic artists Karyn Gabriel\, Mark Goudy\, Kris Marubayashi\, Liza Riddle\, and Laura Van Duren. Together\, these artists create striking geometric and biomorphic forms that underline their pursuit of simple forms inspired by nature. Karyn Gabriel’s woven vessels and hangings merge the idea of fiber and weaving with the flexible nature of clay. Goudy’s current sculptures are modeled on mathematical equations\, which he adapts on the computer\, using new technology to design and create molded forms. Kris Marubayashi’s vessels have a sense of movement and balance\, and employ natural textures and an earth-toned palette. Liza Riddle’s modified cubes\, hanging plinths\, and circles use color sparingly to emphasize the beauty of cracks that form while drying. Captivated by sunlight and always gathering plants\, she prints in her backyard\, capturing botanical impressions and their shadows on watercolor paper or fabric. She then uses natural toners\, collage\, watercolor\, and colored pencil to add layers of depth and detail to her work. DESCRIPTION:Art in Action: Spectacular Seed Bombs\nSaturday\, May 30\, 1-3 PM\n$5 Members\, $10 Non-Members (per person\, all materials included)\nLearn about the ancient Japanese practice of seed bombs! Using air-dry clay and native wildflower seeds\, make seed bombs that you can later plant outdoors or in a garden. Decorate your seed bombs with dried petals and stamps\, and design and illustrate a plant care card to help you take care of the wildflowers you plant. \nHow it works:\nArt in Action engages kids in art projects that are fun\, creative\, and collaborative with their family members. This is a drop-in program for ages 5-12. No registration in advance is required\, but space and supplies are limited to the first 25 participants and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \nWhen you arrive\, pay with cash or card at the front desk. A parent or adult caregiver is required to stay\, but only has to pay for the project for themselves if they are also doing art.
