Children can buy their own fruits and veggies at the “Kid’s Market,” a free event hosted by the Woodland Public Library.

The Woodland Public Library has figured out a delicious and fun way to introduce the concept of money to kids.
Twice a month at the Woodland Farmers Market, a free “Kid’s Market” hosted by the Woodland Public Library lets adults see what happens when children are given free “money” and set loose on an adventure to feed themselves. Very little can go wrong here as the food is some of the healthiest Yolo County has to offer. Shoppers are given five market dollars and can spend them on an assortment of fruits and vegetables, like a handful of strawberries, a peach, or a crunchy carrot—all of which cost one market dollar each.
After spending their cash, kids can get their faces painted for free or gather on the lawn outside the beautiful Woodland Public Library to munch on their market fare. When I visited, there was also live music, a bubble fairy providing entertainment to a group of giggling toddlers, and a visit by several inhabitants of the Galactic Empire, which delighted everyone there and made for some exciting photo ops.
The Kid’s Market makes for a nice outing on a Saturday morning, and can be followed by a visit to the library or a stroll through the neighborhood’s award-winning rose garden.
