Growing up in Public: Davis Parent University hosts Expert Speaker

One of the most worrisome aspects of parenthood today is social media. Usage, consumption, moderation. How much is too much or maybe is zero okay?

As questions swirl, Davis Parent University invites local parents and caregivers to explore the topic in depth with acclaimed author and parenting & media tech expert Dr. Devorah Heitner—right here in Davis.

With relatable stories and research-backed advice, Dr. Heitner will speak about her new book, Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World at the Brunelle Theatre on Wednesday, January 10 at 7p.

In addition to discussing how parents can mentor (and not just monitor) their kids as they grow up on Roblox, Instagram, TikTok, Discord and other social media apps, Dr. Heitner will explain how parents can help young people be thoughtful about their digital footprint and reputation.

Davis Parents University is a free lecture series devoted to parent education, run by volunteers from the Davis Joint Unified School District and St. James School. DPU’s mission is to bring inspirational speakers to Davis that provide parents, caregivers, teachers and administrators with practical tips and tools for raising engaged, empathetic, ethical young people.

“Not surprisingly, we’ve heard from parents and educators throughout our community that tech and social media top their list of concerns for their kids and students,” DPU Chair Abby Koenig told The Dirt. “Devorah Heitner has devoted her career to studying media and technology, and her latest book, Growing Up in Public, shows parents and teachers how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation in their digital world.”

Tickets to the event are free, but seating is limited, so register in advance.

“As we all know, we’re in the middle of a child and teen mental health crisis,” Koenig said. “Some good news though. According to renowned clinical psychologist and New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Lisa Damour, a really solid research finding that has been replicated many times is that the single most powerful force for mental health in young people is strong relationships with caring adults.”
