“Getting Around Davis” events teach travel options & road rules

By: Barbara Archer, City of Davis

The City of Davis invites all residents to attend two ā€œGetting Around Davisā€ transportation events to learn about travel options and the rules of the road.

The first ā€œGetting Around Davisā€ event is on Thursday, June 6, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the Rancho Yolo Senior Community, located at 174 Inner Circle. This event is free and open to all types of mobility levels to learn how to access the many, local transportation options and services in Davis, including bicycling.

The June 6 workshop will include:

  • Unitrans teaching residents about the various routes and handing out bus passes to those that qualify for the Access PassĀ
  • Yolo Bus staff sharing information about routes and assisting with signing up for the fare reduction pass
  • Davis Senior Center staff providing information about Davis Community Transit
  • Davis Police discussing the rules of the road
  • City of Davis transportation staff highlighting the benefits of Capitol Corridor, rideshare and Spin micromobility devices

The second ā€œGetting Around Davisā€ event is on Wednesday, June 12, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Davis Senior Center, located at 646 A Street. This hour-long event will include a presentation by Sergeant John Renger of the Davis Police Department about the rules of the road for people driving, walking and biking. This event is free and open to anyone wanting to learn about bike laws, where to ride on the street, rules for driving, rules for crossing the street and more.

Established in 2013 and formerly called ā€œTravel Training,ā€ the primary goals of these workshops are to increase awareness and understanding and encourage usage of local travel options. The City hopes to increase confidence in using the bus, paratransit, bicycling, car share and more in the community. Through this program, residents can learn to travel to destinations like the movie theater, restaurants or more by biking or taking public transportation.

These workshops aim to improve usage and confidence in using local public transportation, including bicycling, and help residents forge new social connections and increase independence. The workshops are held annually each spring.
