Explorit Science Center faces financial crisis, asks community for help

By: Ashley Arax

Explorit Science Center, a hub of hands-on science education and discovery, is at a financial crossroads. The beloved nonprofit has served Davis and the broader region since 1982 and is now calling on the community to help keep its doors open.

The center needs to raise approximately $80,000 to continue its programming through the end of the year. About half of that is needed immediately to support its popular summer camps.

Explorit has long relied on program revenue from its school partnerships and summer camps, but donations have always been central to sustaining operations. In recent years, increasing costs and fluctuating donations have put pressure on this model, and despite generous support from the community, it has not been enough to close the gap.

Ken Kaplan, president of Explorit’s board of trustees, said Explorit has done its best to keep rates affordable for schools and families.

“Access is important to us…and having a science center in the community is a gift,” he told The Dirt. Finding consistent, large-scale support would help create more financial stability for the organization moving forward.

Today’s Big Day of Giving comes at a critical time for Explorit. Donations can be made directly through the center’s Big Day of Giving page: bigdayofgiving.org/donate/Explorit. The organization is also encouraging supporters to reach out to board members about becoming recurring donors.
