She piloted the event last year\, and we think our community could use another one right about now. \nAt Hope Café you’ll get some time away from the news cycle and instead experience:\n– Local artists jazzing up the space with music and poetry\n– Lighthearted activities that spark curiosity and delight\n– Conversations that build connection in creative\, human ways \nMay’s Hope Café features world jazz duo Nick Carvajal and Jim Frink\, as well as the youth acapella quartet Davis Local Vocals—Evie Barnett\, Ruby Schwerin\, Charlotte DelFavero\, and Matthew Vallero. \nAll of it unfolds in a warm\, welcoming space – complete with snacks! The title was developed in response to the work and writings of the artists in the exhibition and to the regional presence of rivers that move through and around Sacramento. Water becomes a point of connection—flowing\, sustaining\, eroding\, nurturing\, and reshaping. It can lift\, carry\, overwhelm\, or renew. The flow of a river may also be understood simply as the movement of material through the earth. In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning. Together\, these artists offer a collective meditation on movement\, care\, resistance\, and transformation. This exhibition is one moment in an ongoing story. This free playgroup meets on the second Sunday of every month. Bring a gently-loved book or two to swap\, discover your mini’s next favorite read\, and connect with other bookworms. Our book swap is a great way to refresh your bookshelf\, make new friends\, and add an exciting new chapter to your social life! \nWe’ll have bubbles\, simple arts\, and space to play for the little ones. Each month features a different theme and free refreshments will be provided too. \nTogether we can build community around the joy of reading.
