This group is for both experienced artists and amateurs to have an opportunity to draw from the nude model. If you have never drawn from a live model before and would like to join us\, you are very welcome! People of all skill levels\, ages 18 and up\, are welcome and encouraged to join. \nThis is not a class\, and no instruction is provided. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-competitive. Bring your own art materials\, and we’ll provide a comfortable place to sketch or paint live models in our upstairs classroom space. Participants will work independently through a warm up with shorter poses and longer\, twenty-minute poses. DESCRIPTION:Adding Stones to Rise\nA Group Exhibition of Sacramento-Based Artists\nArtist and Curator: Adero Willard \nMay 1 – May 29\, 2026\nSecond Saturday Reception: Saturday\, May 9\, 5–8 PM \nAdding Stones to Rise is a curated group exhibition bringing together Sacramento-based artists working across multiple media\, including painting\, printmaking\, ceramics\, sculpture\, and new media. The title was developed in response to the work and writings of the artists in the exhibition and to the regional presence of rivers that move through and around Sacramento. Water becomes a point of connection—flowing\, sustaining\, eroding\, nurturing\, and reshaping. It can lift\, carry\, overwhelm\, or renew. The flow of a river may also be understood simply as the movement of material through the earth. In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning. Using air-dry clay and native wildflower seeds\, make seed bombs that you can later plant outdoors or in a garden. Decorate your seed bombs with dried petals and stamps\, and design and illustrate a plant care card to help you take care of the wildflowers you plant. \nHow it works:\nArt in Action engages kids in art projects that are fun\, creative\, and collaborative with their family members. This is a drop-in program for ages 5-12. No registration in advance is required\, but space and supplies are limited to the first 25 participants and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \nWhen you arrive\, pay with cash or card at the front desk. The title was developed in response to the work and writings of the artists in the exhibition and to the regional presence of rivers that move through and around Sacramento. Water becomes a point of connection—flowing\, sustaining\, eroding\, nurturing\, and reshaping. It can lift\, carry\, overwhelm\, or renew. The flow of a river may also be understood simply as the movement of material through the earth. In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning. DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present the newest exhibition of paintings by Sacramento-based artist\, Pat Mahony. The works in her exhibition\, all created within the last year\, are representative of her travels throughout California and to Hawaii. She captures endemic and tropical vegetation in her iconic\, impressionistic style.  \nPat Mahony’s natural environment serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She transforms the beauty of the world\, and the “perfect chaos” that signifies the ever-changing impressions imparted by the way that light can alter a moment. She is known for successfully matching the “wildness of nature with a wild and physical application of paint.” Pat Mahony was born in Southern California\, and studied printmaking and oil painting at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. During the 1980s\, she primarily showed her watercolors\, many of which were architectural scenes. After her early painting successes\, she took some time off to pursue other endeavors. Her desire to return to oil painting coincided with her move to a rural property along the Sacramento River. The resulting landscape paintings that she produced over the successive years were large-scale in format and were a strong representation of that land. Her later works\, painted after she relocated to the region near the American River\, became more focused on individual components within nature\, as she went on long walks along the river. She has achieved minute detail within her painting\, utilizing the scale to emphasize particular elements.  \nIn this exhibition she explores scale across multiple canvases\, creating a diptych and a quadriptych\, allowing for greater immersion and artistic presence. Mahony can best be categorized as a colorist\, with a style derived from the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists\, which is well suited for capturing the fleeting moments that begin and end in such rapid succession in the natural world. Her paintings are a balance between abstraction and representation. Immortalizing the vibrancy of the Sacramento Valley natural environment is key to her work\, and her dazzling painting captures the beauty of the beloved flora and landscape she calls home.  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and refreshments. All are well\, and the event is free! \n

In this context\, adding stones may suggest burden\, accumulation\, protection\, labor\, or foundation; rising may evoke resistance\, healing\, survival\, visibility\, or change. \nArtists were selected to create a diversity of voice\, perspective\, process\, medium\, and identity\, speaking to the expansiveness of Blackness and representing a collective of varying experiences. Each point is distinct\, yet inseparable from the whole—reflecting how identity\, particularly Blackness\, can be understood as fluid\, relational\, and non-monolithic. \nAdding Stones to Rise centers the work of Black women and nonbinary artists—new to the region\, rooted here\, or returning. Together\, these artists offer a collective meditation on movement\, care\, resistance\, and transformation. This exhibition is one moment in an ongoing story.
