SUMMARY:“Art History and Climate Change”: 2026 Templeton Colloquium in Art History
DESCRIPTION:by: Michael French\, UC Davis College of Letters & Science \n\n\n\n  \nThe intersection between climate change and art history opens new pathways for understanding how visual and material culture mediates human relationships to the natural world. The 2026 Templeton Colloquium in Art History at UC Davis — “Art History and Climate Change” —- examines how historical and contemporary depictions of nature illuminate aesthetic practices\, register environmental knowledge\, and respond to ecological stress. \n  \n\n\n\nThe colloquium will be held at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art on Friday\, March 6 at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow. The event is free and open to the public. \n  \n\n\n\nThis year’s event has been organized and moderated by John F. López\, Associate Professor of Art History\, Architecture of the Ancient Americas\, Latin America\, and Europe\, and History of Urbanism\, Cartography\, and the Environment\, UC Davis. \n  \n\n\n\n“Far from being a luxury of elite culture\, art history is an essential tool for imagining alternative ecological futures\,” said López \n  \n\n\n\nThis year’s speakers — Alan C. Braddock\, Ralph H. Wark Professor of Art History\, Environmental Humanities and American Studies. William and Mary; and Andrew Patrizio\, Professor of Scottish Visual Culture\, Edinburgh College of Art\, University of Edinburgh\, — examine how art history is key for understanding and addressing climate change. \n  \n\n\n\nIn “Art and the Climate of Industrial Meat\,” Braddock examines an emerging body of creative work by artists who have begun to direct attention at the meat industry as an agent of climate violence using diverse media\, historical references\, and other aesthetic strategies. In “Looking for Love in Chaos Terrains\,” Patrizio draws on a small set of contemporary art practices that speak to the theme of global climate change: Ilana Halperin’s Chaos Terrain (2023); Hanna Tuulikki’s Love (Warbler Remix) (2025) and Elizabeth Ogilvie’s Out of Ice (2014-). \n\n\n\n  \nCo-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History and the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art\, the colloquium is made possible through an endowment established by Alan Templeton (B.A.\, art history and psychology\, ‘82). The Templeton Colloquium brings distinguished speakers to campus for a conversation on vital debates and topics in art history for both scholars and a general audience. \n  \n\n\n\nThe Department of Art and Art History is part of the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis.

SUMMARY:BlackBox Ensemble: Thursday Concert
DESCRIPTION:About BlackBox Ensemble\nNamed as “ambitious” by TimeOut and The New Yorker\, the NYC-based BlackBox Ensemble is a collective of contemporary music performers dedicated to exploring the wide-ranging world of the music of our time. Their 2025–26 season includes a return to The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art\, debuts at National Sawdust and Bowerbird\, and residencies at Penn State\, George Washington University\, UC Davis\, San Francisco State University\, Williams College and a year-long appointment as Ensemble in Residence with University of Richmond\, and more. \nTheir name\, BlackBox\, comes from the many meanings the term holds. In theatre\, a black box is a bare\, flexible space — four dark walls that can transform into anything\, creating an environment ripe for bold experimentation and intimate connection. In science and technology\, a black box is a system with known inputs and outputs\, but the mystery of what happens inside makes it compelling. For us\, we believe music\, as a cultural medium\, lives in that same space — enacting an ambiguous but vital relationship between artistic expression and social life\, where sound\, expression\, and human experience collide in ways that can’t always be explained\, but always resonate. Guided by the spirit of the theatrical black box\, we create programs that invite risk\, innovation\, and connection\, presenting contemporary classical music in ways that feel fresh\, human\, and alive. \nTheir 2024–25 season included concerts at home in New York and around the country\, including a thrilling run of our Speculative Listening program at Bang On A Can Long Play Festival\, The Whitney Museum\, and Chatham PS21 curated by Eastman scholar Isaac Jean-François\, as well as performances at Southern Exposure Series at the University of South Carolina\, Timucua Arts Foundation\, and residencies at the University of Chicago\, University of Florida\, and University of Central Florida. \nTheir 2023–24 season included touring engagements in Washington\, DC\, Florida\, Michigan\, and throughout the Northeast as well as residencies at University of Florida\, University of Michigan\, NYU\, and the Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School. The season opened with The Sound of Space Between Us\, a site-specific\, outdoor music and dance performance at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown\, Massachusetts conceived by our flutist Annie Nikunen. We also presented the live premiere of Borrowed Landscape\, a radio play by German playwright duo tauchgold with music by Dai Fujikura\, at the Noguchi Museum\, in a program that also features music by Anna Thorvaldsdottir\, inti figgis-vizueta\, and Toru Takemistu. We reprised our performance of Borrowed Landscape at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art as part of a two-concert series. In addition\, we celebrated our 5-year anniversary with our inaugural BlackBox Festival\, including our debut at Roulette Intermedium.

SUMMARY:On a Clear Day...New landscape paintings by Phil Gross
DESCRIPTION:Right where we live’ is the subject of Phil Gross’s art show\, ‘On a clear day…’.\nGross’s oil paintings of northern California from aerial and ground perspectives can best be described as idealistic realism. Through a rearrangement of the objects along with a deliberate balancing act of colors\, his compositions invite you to take a deeper look at the places you already know. “I want you to have an overwhelming feeling that with the next step you will suddenly be right in the painting\, breathing in the lusciousness of our latitude.” \nReception: Friday March 13 6-9 pm
