SUMMARY:Charlene Will: Here for a While
DESCRIPTION:Charlene Will: Here for a While\nExhibit: January 9 – February 28\, 2026\nReception: Friday\, January 9\, 6-9 PM (free)\nCharlene Will’s work is rooted in a reverence for nature. Through her abiding interest in exploring the depths of California’s remote wilderness areas\, she seeks to reaffirm basic universal truths\, from an interest in beauty and nature’s rebirth\, to the duality between chaos and order. Working with oils on canvas\, she uses traditional and self-taught brushwork\, glazes\, and the removal of layers to reveal the ephemeral qualities of light and color found in various natural ecosystems. \nArtist Talk with Charlene Will\nSaturday\, January 31\, 2-3:30 PM\n$10 (Free for Students & Members)\nThe artist will give a walk-through of her work\, covering her favorite locations to paint\, how color and light inspires her\, and the noticeable effects of climate on the natural world. Walking\, observing\, and moving through wilderness areas are paramount to her process\, and she’ll provide glimpses into how her work evolves. \nCharlene Will is the recipient of the 2025 Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award. The Award and exhibit are sponsored by Rosa Marquez & Yatish Mishra. \nImage: Charlene Will\, “Anza Borrego”

SUMMARY:"Happy Hour" Schorré Chevalier Oldham: Paintings including Acrylic & Paper Collages
DESCRIPTION:Schorré states that her exhibit\, Happy Hour\, is about facing uncertainty with optimism. “Working daily with my simplified palette in solitude allows me to create what makes me happy.” The limited color palette of red\, yellow\, and blue with black and white provided unlimited possibilities. Project 365’s small collages were constructed using papers created on a gel plate with acrylic paint. The prints are texture-rich with repetitive and irregular patterns. The larger paintings\, while using the same elements\, expanded her use of color\, depth\, and rhythm. \nThis body of work is her way of making sense of the world around her. In the midst of big life changes requiring shifts in perspective\, making art was\, and is\, her lifeline. Working daily with the simplified palette in solitude allows Schorré to create what makes her happy.

SUMMARY:Shambhala Meditation Daylong Retreats
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in February (and again in April and June) to learn more about and to practice the Shambhala teachings. Beginners welcome! \nWe will convene for 2 Saturdays in February to study and practice simple yet profound meditation teachings and practices from the ancient Tibetan teachings of Shambhala transmitted to western students by Chogyam Trungpa. Learn to meditate\, and to develop three main qualities: gentleness\, fearlessness and clear seeing. Centered on the notion of basic goodness\, these practical and beautiful teachings are meant for times that may be easy and also especially for times that are unsettling and difficult. They describe how people can actually make use of fear\, sadness and the human capacity for resilience to access an open awareness that is clear seeing\, steady and kind. \nEach Saturday session will include talks\, guided meditation instruction\, a lunch break\, small discussion groups and a tea break. All levels of practice are welcome. Some may be hearing these teachings for the first time while others may have studied them over many years. \nIf you have attended before consider joining us again to practice together in community. (Special “repeaters pricing”) Each time we mediate together in community\, we step in with “beginners mind.”\nFor questions and to learn more please contact Megan Murphy at meganqmurphy@outlook.com or 510-542-1391 Please Register Here: https://davis.shambhala.org/registration/?id=843908 \nSliding scale pricing offered.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Walks in Davis
DESCRIPTION:Come join Davis Forest School for a Forest Bathing walk led by Forest Mentor Connor Rosenblatt! There are two opportunities to join\, both in Davis (exact location shared after registration): \n-Sunday\, February 22nd from 1:00-3:30pm\n-Saturday\, March 14th from 1:00-3:30pm \nWhat is Forest Bathing? \nForest Bathing is a nature-based wellness practice inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku. In contrast to a hike\, Forest Bathing is a gentle\, mindful practice that emphasizes slowing down\, awakening our senses\, and connecting with nature (and ourselves) on a deeper level. During a Forest Bathing walk\, you will be invited to use your senses to intimately explore the natural world in the presence of a supportive community of practitioners. \nScientific studies have documented numerous benefits of Forest Bathing\, such as a decrease in anxiety\, a decrease in stress\, a decrease in blood pressure\, and an overall improvement in immune system functioning. Regardless of prior experience\, these walks are perfect for anyone interested in spending slow and intentional time in nature with a group. \nRegistration is $20 per person. This event is open to ages 13+.

SUMMARY:Writing Flash: Narratives of Origin
DESCRIPTION:What does “home” mean when you’ve crossed borders—geographic\, emotional\, or temporal? \nIn this intimate\, generative writing workshop\, participants are invited to explore stories of origin\, belonging\, and in-between-ness through the lens of flash—short\, powerful pieces that challenge and also cross the traditional divisions between prose and poetry\, fiction and nonfiction. \nLed by writer Karolina Letunova\, whose creative work emerges from her own experience of leaving Western Siberia as a young adult\, this three-hour workshop is open to writers of all levels of experience. Together\, participants will read brief examples of published flash narratives\, learn what makes these small forms resonate\, and write their own creative work with the support of guided prompts. This community will experience writing as both a private act and as a shared practice—one that helps surface emotional truths\, make them speakable\, and build a sense of belonging. \nWhether you are a foreign-born immigrant carrying an “invisible homeland\,” someone with a complicated relationship to your roots\, or simply curious about writing as a way to connect to yourselves and others\, this workshop offers a welcoming space to reflect\, create\, and be in community with local writers. \nWriters of all skill levels are welcome. No prior writing experience required. \nTickets:\nPresale (through 2/21/25): $20\nI-House Members & Students: $15\nAt the door (all attendees): $25 \nA special thanks to the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs Program and UC Davis Inclusive Excellence for their support of this program. \nAbout Karolina Letunova: \nKarolina Letunova grew up in Western Siberia. Her short stories and short shorts have appeared in AGNI\, The Cincinnati Review\, The Kenyon Review\, and The Threepenny Review. She has an MFA from the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan. \nHer writing has received support from Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe\, California Arts Council\, The de Groot Foundation\, the Elizabeth George Foundation\, as well as fellowships and residencies at Good Hart Artist Residency\, Monson Arts\, Ragdale\, Storyknife\, Ucross\, and VCCA. \nSince 2020\, Karolina has volunteered at Logos Books\, which raises funds for the Davis Public Library.
