SUMMARY:Charlene Will: Here for a While
DESCRIPTION:Charlene Will: Here for a While\nExhibit: January 9 – February 28\, 2026\nReception: Friday\, January 9\, 6-9 PM (free)\nCharlene Will’s work is rooted in a reverence for nature. Through her abiding interest in exploring the depths of California’s remote wilderness areas\, she seeks to reaffirm basic universal truths\, from an interest in beauty and nature’s rebirth\, to the duality between chaos and order. Working with oils on canvas\, she uses traditional and self-taught brushwork\, glazes\, and the removal of layers to reveal the ephemeral qualities of light and color found in various natural ecosystems. \nArtist Talk with Charlene Will\nSaturday\, January 31\, 2-3:30 PM\n$10 (Free for Students & Members)\nThe artist will give a walk-through of her work\, covering her favorite locations to paint\, how color and light inspires her\, and the noticeable effects of climate on the natural world. Walking\, observing\, and moving through wilderness areas are paramount to her process\, and she’ll provide glimpses into how her work evolves. \nCharlene Will is the recipient of the 2025 Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award. The Award and exhibit are sponsored by Rosa Marquez & Yatish Mishra. \nImage: Charlene Will\, “Anza Borrego”

SUMMARY:"Happy Hour" Schorré Chevalier Oldham: Paintings including Acrylic & Paper Collages
DESCRIPTION:Schorré states that her exhibit\, Happy Hour\, is about facing uncertainty with optimism. “Working daily with my simplified palette in solitude allows me to create what makes me happy.” The limited color palette of red\, yellow\, and blue with black and white provided unlimited possibilities. Project 365’s small collages were constructed using papers created on a gel plate with acrylic paint. The prints are texture-rich with repetitive and irregular patterns. The larger paintings\, while using the same elements\, expanded her use of color\, depth\, and rhythm. \nThis body of work is her way of making sense of the world around her. In the midst of big life changes requiring shifts in perspective\, making art was\, and is\, her lifeline. Working daily with the simplified palette in solitude allows Schorré to create what makes her happy.

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtAbout at the Pence Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Pence Gallery for our 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception on February 13\, 6-9 PM. Enjoy browsing multiple art exhibits\, shopping in our Seconds Sale\, complimentary wine\, and an art-themed scavenger hunt. Free admission! \nManuel Fernando Rios: When They Reminisce Over You | Feb. 7 – Mar. 29\nIn his exhibit\, Manuel Fernando Rios shares his interest in themes that explore his Chicano heritage\, as well as his family’s history and experiences. Blurring the line between naturalism and abstraction\, the artist embraces the use of complex design patterns and photography to make a powerful statement. \nCharlene Will: Here for a While | Jan. 9 – Feb. 28\nView a solo exhibit by Charlene Will\, the recipient of the 2025 Pence Gallery Emerging Artist Award. Her work is rooted in a reverence for nature. Working with oils on canvas\, she uses traditional and self-taught brushwork\, glazes\, and the removal of layers to reveal the ephemeral qualities of light and color found in various natural ecosystems. \nSeconds Sale | Feb. 13 – Mar. 6\nArtists often decide to part with works that are experimental\, have a small flaw\, are older pieces\, or duplicates\, so that they can clear space and start new projects\, sharing those works with the people in a ‘seconds sale.’ Find unique works of art from 25+ professional artists\, such as ceramics\, paintings\, textile art\, and more in the sale upstairs. \nMaris Kaplan: Amateur | Jan. 9 – Feb. 18\nWith a focus on sustainability\, Maris Kaplan’s work often incorporates secondhand materials such as thrifted fabric\, upcycled clothing\, and found objects. On display along the stairway\, this series showcases experimentation with new techniques and materials\, embracing wobbly lines\, crooked stitches\, unexpected shapes\, and random color combinations. \nScavenger Hunt: Join us for a fun\, art-themed scavenger hunt at the Pence during the 2nd Friday ArtAbout. Complete all of the clues by exploring our exhibits for the chance to win a special prize. \n— \nVisit the Pence and other venues in Downtown Davis for the 2nd Friday ArtAbout artwalk. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Kallie Emblidge
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Davis native Kallie Emblidge to hear about her debut novel\, Two Left Feet. \nAbout the Book \nA Premier League football star must defend his roster spot—and his heart—when a threateningly talented and handsome midfielder joins his team in this utterly charming debut romance\, a profound love letter to the world’s most popular sport. \nOliver Harris is football royalty in London. Ordinarily the star of the Camden Roses is calm\, cool\, and collected\, keeping his club relevant with his prowess in the midfield and his mighty left foot. But this season\, the threats abound: There’s Camden’s management to contend with—complete with a prickly new Dutch coach\, eager for better results—and a midseason injury\, which sidelines him when his team needs him most. When a recruit is called up to fill in\, Oliver fears he’ll be replaced. If he can mentor this younger talent\, then they might just have a chance at winning\, together. \nAfter a string of lackluster performances in his native Spain\, Leonardo Davies-Villanueva is looking for one last shot with the club he always dreamed of\, where he once played in the youth academy. Oliver immediately finds confident\, eager Leo irritating. He can barely go through the motions\, let alone coach him\, without outright hostility. When he comes to admire Leo’s skill and warms to his humor and energy\, though\, he begins to see Leo as a friend—and then\, to his mounting horror\, as something more. \nLeo craves Oliver’s attention and partnership; Oliver can’t afford to fall in love with his teammate. He’s always kept a tight lid on his sexuality in a league that’s never had a player come out. As the season heats up\, a lot more than football hangs in the balance. Can Oliver—and Leo—win when it counts most? \nAbout the Author \nKallie Emblidge works for The Washington Post and is a co-chair of the paper’s union. She lives and writes in New York City. Two Left Feet is her first novel\, but she’s been a football fan forever.

SUMMARY:Enrollment Opens for Little Coyotes Forest Kinder 2026-2027
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another year of Little Coyotes Forest Kinder\, a land-based program for ages 3-6 that meets outdoors in nature year-round\, rain or shine\, with locations in Davis (South Fork Preserve)\, Sacramento (William B. Pond area) and Folsom Lake. \nThis program creates a nurturing and gentle transition for children who are taking their first steps beyond the familiar comforts of home. We provide a supportive environment where they can begin to explore and engage with the natural world around them\, encouraging a sense of curiosity\, independence\, and confidence in their early learning journey. \nOur educational approach revolves around fostering a deep connection between children and the natural world. Throughout the day\, our Forest Mentors and children engage in collaborative learning experiences that are rooted in our local environment. We believe deeply in a child-led approach to education\, one that meets children where they are in their development and comfort zones and then allows them to bloom and grow through their connection with nature. There is a lot of playing\, exploration\, and singing. We have a seasonal curriculum\, a collection of activities\, books\, and crafts that support social-emotional literacy\, creative expression\, and critical thinking skills.
