From Harm to Home: A Fundraiser for Afghan Refugees
November 6, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm$125
On November 6th from 4-6:30 pm, I-House Davis will host From Harm to Home: A Fundraiser for Afghan Refugees. Proceeds from the event will support International Rescue Committee Sacramento. The IRC Sacramento assists refugee families who have fled Afghanistan to rebuild their lives here in our region.
The event will be in person and mostly outdoors. Jessica Goudeau, acclaimed author of “After the Last Border,” will provide a virtual talk about the complicated nature of resettlement. The event will also feature artwork by renowned Afghan street artist, Shamsia Hassani. Not only will there be artwork, but House of Shah in Woodland will also provide delicious Afghan appetizers and delicate desserts.
Tickets are $125 for the event, and there are many ways to donate to the cause. I-House is collecting visa, target or amazon gift cards in any denomination and in any amount listed on I-House’s website. These gift cards will be distributed directly to Afghan refugees. Donors that cannot come to the in-person event will be able to view the program virtually via zoom.
Background of Sacramento’s Afghan Community
Sacramento has one of the largest Afghan communities in the United States, and refugees who have fled Afghanistan arrive here almost daily. Newly arrived refugees have survived a lot of trauma. To help them recover and thrive takes collaboration by agencies and nonprofit organizations as well as the generosity of communities.
“At I-House, our mission is to build community locally by creating international connections and exploring global issues,” says I-House Executive Director, Shelly Gilbride. “Supporting Afghan refugees feels like a wonderfully impactful way to re-emerge from Covid. We are honored to support the work of IRC Sacramento and to galvanize the incredible generosity of our community.”
Fundraising Goal: $25,000+
The effort has received generous community support already. Spearheaded by former I-House Board Chair Judy Wydick, the University Retirement Center community relations committee has collected several dozen donations from residents. Other local businesses like Smith Funeral Home, Purves Insurance, and Avid Reader have also supported the cause.
Our current goal is to raise over $25,000 for IRC Sacramento on November 6th. For more information, go to https://internationalhousedavis.org/program/from-harm-to-home-fundraiser-for-afghanistan/
